Coach Moore Moves Focus to Family, Retires from Coaching

With a career that includes multiple state championships and a slew of coaching awards, it is safe to say that Coach Chris Moore will be missed as the varsity soccer coach.

Moore, who teaches US Government and IB History SL, started his coaching career in South Carolina. Moore said, “I started coaching, kind of on a whim, when my college coach asked me and a few others to help with a local South Carolina YMCA travel team.” He added, “I would help work soccer camps for my college coach in the summers and during the spring semester coached youth teams at a local YMCA…it was a really great experience and I realized that it was an awesome opportunity to teach others my love for the game and how it is played.” Moore eventually moved on to be an assistant coach at Conway High School, before moving back to Louisville.

During his tenure as head coach, Moore won state championships in 2007, 2008, and 2009 and prestigious awards such as the KY Private School Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008, and 2009 for the NSCAA and KHSGSCA, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Region 4 Coach of the Year in 2009, and the NFHS Midwest Sectional Coach of the Year in 2009.

“I have learned so many lessons in my life from soccer such as the values of discipline, work ethic, and teamwork to name a few,” he said. Moore said he also had a goal that went beyond a state championship for any of the SHA soccer teams he coached. “I…had the goal of creating an atmosphere where the players worked hard, always looked to improve, but most importantly had fun. That’s what soccer always was for me, hard at times, but almost always fun. It was a time where I could forget about school or other problems and just play. I have always tried to create that atmosphere at Sacred Heart.”

The decision to resign was sparked by Moore’s desire to spend more time with his family. “Now that our kids are getting older they are getting more and more involved in sports and other activities and it was difficult during the summer and fall with soccer to let them do some of these activities,” he said. “I want to be able to spend time with them doing these things and hope to coach them some myself in the near future.”
