Increase attendance at school events + foster school spirit = The Spirit Cup Challenge
For the 2-14-15 school year, Sacred Heart Academy has introduced the Spirit Cup Challenge in an effort to boost attendance at school events. The challenge allows students to earn spirit points for attending various SHA events, ranging from athletics to the arts. Meredith Edelen, senior and 100 Club President, and the Student Council created this new program to encourage students to attend school events. Edelen states that the Spirit Cup Challenge is a “New, creative way to bring Sacred Heart’s student body together.” There will be three rounds to the Spirit Cup Challenge: fall, winter, and spring.
According to Ms. Connie Ferch ’04, 100 Club Moderator, when students attend events which were pre-approved by the Student Council, they will earn a specific number of sprit points. The number of points varies depending on the event. For example, attending general athletic events that are advertised by the Student Council earns one point. When the Valkyries make it to state, spectators have an opportunity to earn three points. Attending performances by the Madrigal or A Capella choir earn three points. In addition to concerts and athletic events, Valkyries have the opportunity to earn three spirit points at Sacred Heart plays and art shows. You can track your grade’s progress by watching the TV in the cafeteria, where the 100 Club will post updated scores.
October 9 marked the end of the Fall Sprit Cup Challenge term. The sophomore class was announced as the winner at the Fall Pep Rally. They were rewarded with a class color free dress day and cake at lunch.
The points from the previous season will be wiped away, as the challenge will start over for the winter term. This gives the losing grades an opportunity to start fresh, and possibly win the next season.
Ferch says, “The girls are excited about it, and constantly asking me who’s in the lead.” Next year, Ferch would like to raise more awareness for the challenge. Peters says, “So far, the Spirit Cup Challenge is a success and has had a really positive effect on the school’s spirit.” The Student Council is hopeful that students will continue to come out to events and support their fellow Valkyries.
